The Tornado Thermal Switch (part# 39318) is a genuine Tacony OEM safety cutoff that protects the motor on the CK 14/1 series uprights from overheating. When airflow is restricted — a full bag, a clog, or a blocked filter — heat builds at the motor, and this switch cuts power before that heat can damage the windings, then resets once the motor cools.
It is a small bimetallic switch wired into the motor circuit. A healthy switch trips only when the machine genuinely overheats; a failing one can trip early and often, refuse to reset, or stop protecting the motor at all. Because it sits inside the housing near the motor, replacement is a job for someone comfortable opening the machine and handling wiring.
Compatible Models for the Tornado Thermal Switch
- Tornado CK 14/1 BSE — Model 98145
- Tornado CK 14/1 Pro — Model 98147
- Tornado CK 14/1 QD — Model 98174
Replace the Thermal Switch if the vacuum shuts off repeatedly even with a clear airflow path and a fresh bag, if it will not reset after cooling, or if it no longer trips when the motor is clearly hot. Installation means opening the housing and transferring the wiring connections, so a Phillips screwdriver and some care are needed — if you are unsure, our service team can do it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Thermal Switch do on the Tornado CK 14/1?
It is a safety cutoff that shuts the motor off if it overheats — usually from a clog or full bag — and resets once the motor cools, protecting the windings from damage.
My vacuum keeps shutting off — is the Thermal Switch (part# 39318) the problem?
First clear any clog and replace a full bag. If it still trips repeatedly with good airflow, or will not reset after cooling, the switch itself is likely worn and should be replaced.
Is part# 39318 the genuine Tacony OEM Thermal Switch?
Yes. It is the factory Tacony OEM cutoff calibrated for the CK 14/1 motor, so it trips at the correct temperature — an off-spec switch can trip too early or fail to protect the motor.
How do I order the Thermal Switch (part# 39318) or get help?
You can add the Thermal Switch (part# 39318) directly to your cart on this page, or call us at 763-535-0770. Our staff at 5415 West Broadway, Crystal, MN 55428 has been servicing Tornado equipment since 1956 and can help confirm the right part for your machine.
