This fitting does two jobs in one body: it turns the solution line through ninety degrees and it provides a quick-disconnect at the same point. That combination is convenient in a tight chassis, and it is also why this is the fitting in the family that cracks most often. Part number 32183 is the genuine OEM nylon elbow QD for 3/8 inch tube.

Two features in one nylon body means two stress risers close together. The bend already concentrates load at the outside of the curve; the disconnect collar takes the pulling and twisting of every service cycle. A crack here usually starts where those two zones meet, which is the hardest place on the fitting to see. Take the tube off and look at the inside of the bend under a light before deciding the leak is elsewhere.

Because it is an elbow, it also has a favourite failure of its own: a tube pushed on and then pulled round to reach its destination. The elbow was supposed to do the turning. If the tube arrives at the barb already at an angle, the fitting is being levered every second the machine runs, and no fitting survives that indefinitely. Route the tube so it approaches the barb straight.

On the disconnect side, the seal is an O-ring rather than a thread. A weep at the coupling is usually the ring — flattened, set, or nicked by grit picked up off the stem — and pushing the halves together harder does nothing. Never separate the coupling with the system still under pressure: that drives grit past the sealing face and creates the leak you will find next time.

Check the coupling still grips. Hundreds of service cycles wear the locking feature, and a joint that pulls apart with almost no force is finished even if it holds pressure while connected. On a machine used commercially that is worth catching before the line separates mid-job.

Fit with the tube cut square and pushed fully home, clamped on the barb rather than on bare tube, and with the elbow oriented so the tube runs naturally to where it is going. Wipe the QD stem before reconnecting — most failures in this family start as grit on that face.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used on the Tornado 98150 Mini-Marathon 425, 98150-ACE, 98150-PF and 98150LM Mini Marathon Lundmark extractors, the 98164 MWH-800, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 if your machine is not listed.

Why does this fitting crack more often than the other nylon ones?

Because it combines two stress risers in one body. The bend concentrates load at the outside of the curve, and the disconnect collar takes the pulling and twisting of every service cycle. Cracks usually start where those two zones meet, which is also the hardest place to see — take the tube off and look at the inside of the bend.

My tube has to be pulled round to reach its fitting — does that matter?

Yes, and it is the commonest way this elbow is destroyed. The elbow is supposed to do the turning. A tube that arrives at the barb already at an angle levers the fitting every second the machine runs. Re-route it so it approaches the barb straight.
