“Finished hex” is a specification, not a description of quality: it means a full-height nut with a chamfered bearing face and controlled dimensions, as opposed to a jam nut or a heavy nut. Part number 16673 is the genuine OEM 1/2-13 finished hex nut in stainless.

Height is the thing people get wrong. A full-height nut has enough thread engagement to develop the strength of the bolt; a jam nut is deliberately thinner and is not a substitute for one. Fitting a jam nut where a finished hex belongs gives a joint that looks correct and strips its threads under load, and the failure happens at the worst moment rather than during assembly.
At 1/2-13 this nut is holding something substantial. Check the bearing face when you remove one: a nut that has been pulled down onto an uneven surface shows a bright, partial contact ring rather than an even one, and a nut bearing on part of its face is clamping with part of its strength.
Stainless brings corrosion resistance and the galling caution. Stainless on stainless cold-welds under fast running, and a galled 1/2-13 nut seized half way down its bolt is a genuine problem to remove. Run it on by hand, and if it binds unexpectedly, back it off and clean the thread rather than forcing it.
Do not mix stainless and plated fasteners in the same joint where it can be avoided. Dissimilar metals in wet detergent corrode galvanically at the junction and the softer one loses.
Fit to the correct torque with the specified washer arrangement, and fit a new lock washer where one is called for — a reused one has spent its spring and the joint will work loose whatever the nut.

Frequently Asked Questions
What machines does the nut 16673 fit?
It is fitted to the Tornado 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained carpet extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series, and it is shared across many other machines. Call 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will confirm fitment before you order.
What does “finished hex” mean?
A full-height nut with a chamfered bearing face and controlled dimensions, as distinct from a jam nut or a heavy nut. The height matters: a full-height nut has enough thread engagement to develop the strength of the bolt, and a thinner jam nut in its place gives a joint that looks right and strips under load.
Can I use a jam nut instead?
No. A jam nut is deliberately thinner and is not a substitute for a full-height nut. The joint will assemble normally and fail under load rather than during assembly, which is the worst way for a fastener to be wrong.
