The Tornado Standpipe 16-3/4″ Recovery Tank (part# 19139) is the genuine OEM tube that sets the working air path inside the recovery tank of Tornado self-contained carpet extractors. Its height is the whole point: at 16-3/4 inches it keeps the vacuum motor’s intake above the rising water line, so the machine keeps pulling air rather than swallowing recovered solution. Get that height wrong and the motor drinks.

Standpipes fail quietly. The usual cause is a knock during tank cleaning that cracks the tube near its base, or a mounting clamp that has worked loose and let the pipe sit at an angle. Either way the symptom is the same and it is easy to misread: the machine seems to lose suction as the tank fills, or water appears where it should not. Operators blame the vacuum motor; the motor is usually innocent.
Check it whenever you are inside the tank for any other reason. Look for a hairline split running up from the base, a pipe that rocks in its clamp, or an intake that no longer sits square. A standpipe that is intact but loose does not need replacing — it needs its mounting clamp tightened, and that is worth ruling out first.
When you do replace it, take the opportunity to clean the tank properly. Detergent film and carpet fibre build up around the base of the standpipe and are part of why the next one gets knocked: you cannot see what you are working around. Refit square, tighten the clamp enough to hold without distorting the tube, and check the lid gasket while the tank is open.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Standpipe 16-3/4″ do inside a Tornado recovery tank?
It holds the vacuum motor’s intake above the water line as the tank fills, so the machine keeps drawing air instead of pulling recovered solution into the motor.
How do I know if my Standpipe (part# 19139) needs replacing?
Look for a hairline crack near the base or a tube that rocks in its mounting clamp. The giveaway symptom is suction that seems to fade as the tank fills, or water turning up where it should not — both of which get blamed on the vacuum motor.
