The side members are the vertical legs of the tank frame — the pieces the cross members tie together and the pieces that transfer the weight of a full machine down into the chassis. Part number 19317 is the genuine OEM side member for the Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors.

Sides fail differently from cross members. A cross member cracks at a weld because it is resisting racking; a side member is in compression carrying load, so what happens to it is buckling or splaying at the foot. The visible symptom is a machine that looks slightly wider at the bottom of the frame than it used to, or a frame that no longer sits flat on the chassis mounting points.
Check the feet first. That is where a side member meets the chassis, where solution collects, and where corrosion does its work out of sight. Get underneath with a light and look at the base of each side: rust bleeding out of the joint, a foot that has thinned, or a fastener that will not pull the frame down tight all indicate the member has gone at the bottom even when the rest of it looks fine.
The second check is squareness. Measure diagonally across the frame from top corner to opposite bottom corner, both ways. Equal diagonals mean the frame is square. A difference of more than a few millimetres means the cage has been pushed out of shape, and replacing a cross member without correcting the sides just holds the distortion.
Because the sides carry the load, a failing one is worth acting on rather than watching. A frame that collapses with full tanks in it does real damage on the way down — to the pipework, to the tank fittings and sometimes to the chassis mounting bosses. The member itself is far cheaper than any of that.
Fit the replacement with both tanks out and the frame supported. Get the diagonals equal before tightening, then seat the tanks and check the lid gasket compresses evenly. If the frame needed forcing to get square, expect to check the other side member too — they work as a pair and one rarely deforms alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the side tank frame member 19317 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800 carpet extractors, the Tornado 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.
How do I know a side member has failed?
Check the feet where the member meets the chassis. That is where solution collects and corrosion works out of sight. Rust bleeding from the joint, a thinned foot, or a fastener that will not pull the frame down tight all mean the member has gone at the bottom even when the rest looks sound.
How do I check whether the frame is still square?
Measure diagonally across the frame, top corner to opposite bottom corner, both ways. Equal diagonals mean it is square. More than a few millimetres of difference means the cage has been pushed out of shape, and fitting a new cross member without correcting the sides just holds the distortion in place.
