What the body seal does

A backpack vacuum only develops suction because the canister is airtight. The motor is trying to pull air through the bag and filters; anywhere it can get air more easily, it will. The body seal is the long perimeter joint where that cheating is most likely, because it is the largest gap the machine has to close.

The seal works by being compressed. The latch (part# A352-3300) pulls the lid down and squashes the gasket into the rim, and it is that squeeze, not mere contact, that makes the joint airtight. Rubber that has taken a permanent set no longer pushes back, so the lid touches the seal without ever sealing against it.

When to replace the body seal

Replace it when suction is poor with a fresh bag and clean filters, when you can hear air being drawn in around the lid line while the motor runs, when the seal looks flattened or has a permanent groove pressed into it, or when the rubber has gone hard and shiny rather than staying soft and slightly tacky.

A quick field test: close and latch the lid on a clean machine, run it, and slowly run a hand around the lid seam. If you can feel air being pulled in anywhere along that line, the seal or the latch is the problem.

Check the latch (part# A352-3300) at the same time. A worn latch and a flattened body seal cause exactly the same symptom and usually wear together — replacing one and leaving the other means doing the job twice.
