Do not confuse this with the motor mount

Tacony uses very similar names for four different parts in the same area of the machine, and mixing them up is the most common ordering mistake on a backpack motor job:

• B352-5400 — top motor shroud, the rigid moulded cover
• B352-5300 — bottom motor shroud, the rigid moulded base
• B352-1800 — top motor mount, the rubber cushion (also listed as top motor shroud seal)
• B352-1900 — bottom motor mount, the rubber cushion (also listed as bottom motor shroud seal)

The shrouds are hard plastic housings. The mounts are soft rubber cushions. If you need the soft part, you want B352-1800 or B352-1900, not this one.

What the bottom motor shroud does

The bottom shroud is the motor’s seat. It locates the motor precisely, carries its weight, and closes the underside of the motor chamber so air is drawn through the filters rather than up from below. Everything above it — motor, mounts, top shroud — is positioned relative to this part.

That makes its condition disproportionately important. A cracked or distorted bottom shroud lets the motor sit slightly out of position, and a motor that is even a few millimetres off centre puts uneven load on its bearings and its mounts. Machines that go through motors unusually fast are often doing so because of a tired shroud nobody thought to inspect.

When to replace the bottom motor shroud

Replace it if there is any crack in the moulding, if a mounting boss has broken or stripped, if the motor does not seat squarely and evenly in it, or if the plastic has gone chalky and discoloured from years of heat.

Replace it as a matter of course if the machine has suffered a hard drop. Impact damage to the bottom shroud is easy to miss because the visible damage is usually on the outer housing, while the crack that matters is underneath the motor where nobody looks.

Since removing the motor is the hard part of this job, replace the top and bottom motor mounts (B352-1800 and B352-1900) while you are in there. They are inexpensive rubber parts that harden with the same heat, and they are the reason to avoid a second teardown.
