What the filter does

This is a small foam puck, 1-3/4 inches across and half an inch thick, sitting in the solution circuit. Its job is to catch the particulate that gets into the clean side — undissolved detergent powder, scale and grit from tap water, and whatever falls in while the tank is being filled in a corridor or a van — before it reaches the pump and the tool jet.

Catching that matters because of what is downstream. The jet on a spotter tool is a small, precisely sized orifice; a single grain of grit will partially block it, and the result is a spray that goes from a clean fan to a spit, a dribble or a jet that fires off to one side. The pump suffers too: solids passing through it score the internals, and a pump that has been fed unfiltered solution for a long time loses pressure even when nothing has obviously failed.

Foam is specified rather than a mesh because it filters through its depth rather than at a surface, so it holds a useful amount of material before the flow is affected.

When to replace it

This is a consumable, and the cheapest part in the solution circuit. Replace it on a schedule rather than waiting for a symptom — it costs a fraction of the pump and the tool it protects.

Replace it when the foam has discoloured and will not rinse clean, when it has gone stiff or brittle, when it has torn or lost pieces from an edge (loose foam fragments are exactly what you were trying to keep out of the jet), or when it has compressed and no longer fills its seat. A filter that is visibly loaded is already restricting flow.

The symptom that points here is reduced spray pressure or volume with a pump that sounds normal. Before replacing a pump for weak spray, change this filter and clear the tool jet — between them they account for most “the pump is failing” calls.

Fitting notes

Check the filter seats fully in its location, with no gap at the edge for solution to bypass it — a filter that is not sealing in its seat filters nothing. Rinse the housing out before fitting the new one so you are not putting a clean filter on top of old debris. While you are in the circuit, check the solution filter screen and the tool jet as well; the three work together and a blockage anywhere in the chain produces the same symptom. Twin City Vacuum has been selling and servicing commercial floor-care equipment since 1956.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the Extractor Foam Filter X2715?

1-3/4 inches outside diameter and 1/2 inch thick. Foam is specified rather than mesh because it filters through its depth, so it holds a useful amount of material before flow is affected.

What does the Extractor Foam Filter protect?

The solution pump and the tool jet. It catches undissolved detergent, scale and grit from tap water, and anything that falls in during filling, before that material can score the pump internals or partially block the jet.

How often should the Extractor Foam Filter be replaced?

Treat it as a scheduled consumable rather than waiting for a symptom — it is the cheapest part in the solution circuit and protects the most expensive. Replace it when it has discoloured and will not rinse clean, gone stiff or brittle, torn or lost pieces from an edge, or compressed so it no longer fills its seat.
