Why the HEPA filter matters on a backpack vacuum
On a backpack machine the operator wears the exhaust. Whatever the final filter fails to catch is discharged at shoulder height, directly into the breathing zone of the person carrying it and into the room being cleaned. That is why these units are specified with sealed HEPA media rather than a simple foam pad, and why a collapsed, split or bypassed filter is a genuine indoor-air-quality problem rather than a maintenance nicety.
The filter is also the motor’s protection. Fine dust that gets past a damaged filter goes straight through the motor, and abrasive grit on the armature and bearings is one of the fastest ways to shorten motor life.
When to replace the HEPA filter
Replace on a fixed schedule rather than waiting for a symptom — by the time suction drops noticeably the filter has been restricting airflow and overheating the motor for some time. Replace immediately if you can see grey dust downstream of the filter, if the pleats are collapsed or oily, if the sealing gasket is hardened or torn, or if the machine keeps tripping its thermal protection switch with a fresh bag fitted. Never wash and reuse it: the media is not designed to be wetted and washing destroys its rating while leaving it looking fine.
Change the post filter (B352-2400) at the same time, and check the filter cap (B352-1000) and filter plate (B352-0800) still clamp the filter squarely — a filter that is not sealed at its edges is bypassed no matter how new it is. Frequently Asked Questions
What does the HEPA filter (part# B352-5200) do?
It is the sealed final-stage filter on the machine. All air leaving the vacuum passes through it, so it determines the exhaust air quality and it also protects the motor from fine abrasive dust.
How often should the HEPA filter (part# B352-5200) be replaced?
On a schedule, not on symptoms — a restricted filter overheats the motor long before you notice weak suction. Replace immediately if the pleats are collapsed or oily, the gasket is hardened or torn, or you see dust downstream of the filter.
Can I wash and reuse the HEPA filter (part# B352-5200)?
No. The media is not washable. Washing destroys the filtration rating while leaving the filter looking serviceable, which is the worst of both outcomes on a machine whose exhaust the operator wears.
How do I order the HEPA filter (part# B352-5200) or get help?
