Over-Center Latch with Keeper X9059
$17.55
Genuine OEM over-center draw latch supplied complete with its keeper (part# X9059), the pair of latches that clamp the tank assembly closed on commercial carpet spotters. A latch that closes but no longer clamps tight shows up as lost suction, not as a broken latch. Fitted across Tornado and Powr-Flite machines, including the PS Spotter 98220 and 98221 — see the compatibility list below.
Genuine OEM over-center latch with keeper (part# X9059), for commercial carpet spotters and vapor misters — a shared part fitted across Tornado and Powr-Flite machines as well as the PS Spotter 98220 and 98221 (see the list below). The dealer catalog lists it as “Latch Over Center W/Keeper”, and it is supplied complete with its mating keeper. The machine uses two.
Compatible Models for the Over-Center Latch
- Tornado PS Spotter 98220 — PS Series professional spotter, 115V
- Tornado PS8221 Spotter 98221 — the 230-volt build of the same spotter
The factory cross-reference returns twelve machines for this latch, across Tornado spotters and Powr-Flite equipment. We publish only the models we can confirm against the manufacturers’ current catalogs, so if yours is not listed call us at 763-535-0770 with the model and serial number and we will confirm it before you order.
How an over-center latch works
An over-center latch — the type also called a draw latch or toggle latch — works by geometry rather than by friction. The handle pivots past a dead-center point, and once past it the tension in the loop pulls the handle further closed rather than letting it spring open. That is why it holds without a catch or a lock: the load itself is what keeps it shut, and the harder the joint is pulled apart, the tighter the latch holds.
On this machine the pair of latches clamp the tank assembly closed, and they are doing something more specific than just holding a lid on. The joint they close is a sealing joint: the vacuum motor pulls a partial vacuum inside the recovery side, and the latches have to hold the mating faces together firmly and evenly enough for that seal to be maintained while the machine is working. Suction is, in effect, a continuous attempt to pull the assembly shut from the inside — but only if the latches have closed it square to begin with.
The keeper is the fixed hook or loop the latch pulls against, and it is half the mechanism. The geometry is set by the distance between the latch and the keeper; a bent, worn or wrongly positioned keeper changes that distance, and the latch then either goes over-center with no clamping force left or will not reach at all. This part ships with both pieces, which is the right way to replace it.
When to replace it
Replace the latch if the handle no longer snaps positively over-center and stay closed, if it springs open on its own, or if it has to be forced so hard that something flexes to let it close. Replace it if the loop or draw link is stretched, bent or cracked, if the pivot has worn loose so there is play in the handle, if the spot welds or rivets have failed, or if the base is corroded or pulling away from its mounting.
Replace it with its keeper if the keeper is bent, worn into a groove, or loose on its fixings. Fitting a new latch to a tired keeper reproduces the original problem.
The symptom that points here is not a broken latch but lost suction. A latch that closes but no longer clamps tight lets the tank joint sit open a fraction of a millimetre, and a vacuum system leaks air far more readily than it leaks water. If a machine has weak suction with a good motor, clean filters and a clear hose, check that both latches are pulling the joint fully closed before going any further — and replace both at once, since a single tight latch alongside a slack one holds the joint closed at one end and open at the other.
Fitting notes
Note the exact position of the old latch and keeper before removing either, and transfer the new parts to the same holes. Over-center latches are unforgiving about position: a few millimetres out and you get either no clamping force or a latch that will not close.
Fit both halves before judging the result, then check the action by hand. Closing should take firm but reasonable effort, the handle should go positively over-center, and with the latch closed the mating faces should be in even contact all the way round — not pinched at one end. Make sure nothing is trapped in the joint and that the tank gasket is seated before latching. If you fit a pair, set them both and then re-check the first, because clamping one end can change how the other sits.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Over-Center Latch X9059 do?
It clamps the tank assembly closed. The handle pivots past a dead-center point, and beyond that point the tension in the loop pulls it further shut, so the latch holds without a lock — the load itself keeps it closed and holds the mating faces together for the seal.
Does the Over-Center Latch come with the keeper?
Yes. The keeper is the fixed hook the latch pulls against, and it is half the mechanism — the clamping geometry is set by the distance between the two. Fitting a new latch to a bent or worn keeper reproduces the original fault, which is why they are supplied together.
Can a worn Over-Center Latch cause loss of suction?
Yes, and this is the usual symptom rather than an obviously broken latch. One that closes but no longer clamps tight leaves the tank joint open a fraction of a millimetre, and a vacuum system leaks air far more easily than it leaks water. With a good motor, clean filters and a clear hose, check both latches are pulling the joint fully closed.
