What the post filter frame does

On its own the post filter is a loose piece of foam. The frame is what turns it into a working filter stage: it holds the foam flat and square across the whole exhaust opening so that all the air leaving the motor has to pass through the media rather than slipping around its edges. A filter that is not held properly is not filtering — the air simply takes the path of least resistance around it.

Because the frame lives on the hot side of the motor, it is a part that ages by embrittlement rather than wear. Years of heat cycling make the plastic brittle, and the thin retaining tabs are usually the first thing to go.
