The most abused part on the machine

Nothing else on a backpack vacuum takes the punishment the cord does. It gets dragged across floors, run over by its own operator, yanked from sockets by the lead rather than the plug, wrapped tight around hooks while still warm, and pinched in doorways. It is also the only part of the machine carrying mains voltage in the open.

That combination is why cord condition is a safety matter rather than a convenience one. A worn cord does not fail gracefully; it fails as a shock risk, a short or a fire.

When to replace the power cord

Replace it immediately, and take the machine out of service until you do, if you can see any of the following: cuts, nicks or abrasion through the outer jacket; any exposed conductor at all; a plug that is cracked, loose, discoloured or warm in use; scorch marks anywhere; or a cord that is stiff, tacky or has melted sections.

Replace it too if the machine cuts out when the cord is flexed near either end. That is a broken conductor inside intact insulation, and it will arc where it flexes. A cord in that condition is not repairable with tape — taping a mains lead on a machine worn against somebody’s body is not a repair.

Replace the strain relief (part# B352-6800) with it. The strain relief is what stops the new cord being pulled out of its terminals, and an old one will not grip a new cord properly.
