What the thermal protection switch does

Vacuum motors are cooled by the air passing through them. When airflow is restricted — a full bag, a blocked hose, a loaded filter — the motor keeps drawing current but loses its cooling, and temperature climbs quickly. The thermal protection switch sits in that circuit and opens when it reaches its trip temperature, cutting power before the windings are damaged. Once the motor cools, the switch closes again and the machine will run.

That behaviour is the diagnostic. A machine that runs for a few minutes, cuts out, then restarts after ten or fifteen minutes is almost always telling you the airflow is restricted — not that the switch is bad. Clear the blockage, fit a fresh bag and filters, and the cut-outs should stop.
