Why the top cover fails

The top cover takes the abuse on a backpack vacuum. It is the part that hits door frames and desk edges, the part that gets dropped when the machine is set down hard, and the part operators grab to lift the canister even though it was never meant to be a handle. Cracks usually start at the inlet boss or along the moulded rib where the lid meets the canister rim, and they spread every time the lid is flexed.

A cracked or warped top cover is not cosmetic. The lid is part of the sealed airflow path — if it no longer sits flat against the bag compartment seal, the machine draws unfiltered air straight past the bag and suction at the hose drops noticeably.
