Tornado PS Spotter 98220 Deflector X2530
Genuine Tornado OEM deflector (part# X2530), the baffle inside the PS Spotter 98220 recovery tank. It turns and slows the incoming stream of air, water and soil so the water drops out into the tank instead of carrying on up the vacuum stack. Seals against its own gasket, part number X2532.
The Tornado PS Spotter 98220 Deflector X2530 is the genuine OEM baffle inside the recovery tank of the PS Series professional spotter. The factory parts book lists it simply as “Deflector”, and it works together with its own gasket, part number X2532, which Tornado catalogs as the gasket for the 2 gallon spotter deflector.

What the deflector does
Everything the machine picks up arrives in the recovery tank as a mixture of air, water and soil travelling fast up the hose. If that stream were allowed to continue straight across the tank it would arrive at the vacuum stack still carrying water, and the water would go up the stack towards the motor.
The deflector is the baffle that stops that happening. It turns and slows the incoming stream so the heavy content loses its velocity and drops out into the tank, while the air separates and carries on to the stack. It is a passive part with no moving components, which is exactly why it is easy to overlook — and why a damaged one is so often missed when a machine stops recovering properly.
It also protects the float and flapper. Without the deflector, incoming water hits the float assembly directly, which can lift the float at the wrong moment and cause suction to cut out on a tank that is nowhere near full.
When to replace it
Replace the deflector if it is cracked, split or has a piece broken away, if it has distorted so it no longer sits square against its sealing face, or if it has worked loose and shifted out of position. Any of those lets the incoming stream bypass the baffle.
Two symptoms point here. The first is water carrying through to the vacuum motor while the float, flapper and stack all check out as serviceable. The second is intermittent, premature shut-off — suction cutting out on a part-full tank — caused by the incoming stream striking the float directly. Inspect the deflector’s gasket at the same time: a sound deflector sitting on a failed gasket leaks around its edge and behaves much the same as a cracked one.
Fitting notes
Fit a new deflector gasket (part number X2532) whenever the deflector is removed; the old gasket has taken its set and is a false economy next to opening the tank again. Clean the sealing face before reassembly and make sure the deflector seats square and fully home rather than being pulled into position by its fasteners. With the tank open, check that the float still travels freely once the deflector is back in. Twin City Vacuum has been selling and servicing Tornado equipment since 1956.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Deflector X2530 do on the Tornado PS Spotter 98220?
It is the baffle in the recovery tank. It turns and slows the incoming stream of air, water and soil so the water drops out into the tank instead of carrying on up the vacuum stack towards the motor.
How do I know if my Deflector needs replacing?
Look for cracks, a broken section, distortion that stops it seating square, or a deflector that has worked loose. Water reaching the vacuum motor despite a serviceable float, flapper and stack, or suction cutting out on a part-full tank, both point here.
Do I need the deflector gasket as well?
Fit a new one. The deflector seals against its own gasket, part number X2532, and the old gasket has already taken a permanent set — a sound deflector on a failed gasket leaks around its edge and behaves like a cracked part.
