- Tornado PS Spotter 98220 — PS Series professional spotter, 115V, Series G only
This is a Series G part. Tornado’s factory cross-reference returns the Series G build of the 98220 and no other machine, which is consistent with Series G introducing a reworked electrical enclosure. If your serial label shows Series C, D, E or F, this is not your gasket — call us at 763-535-0770 with the serial number and we will read the series off it and identify the right part.
What this gasket seals
A carpet spotter is a wet machine with mains electricity inside it, and the electrical components cover is the barrier between the two. This gasket is what makes that barrier actually seal. Without it, or with a tired one, the cover is a lid sitting on a flange — it keeps out splash but not the moist, detergent-laden air that circulates inside the housing while the machine runs.
That distinction is the whole point. Direct splash causes an obvious, immediate failure. Moist air causes a slow one: terminals corrode, contact resistance climbs, switch contacts pit, and the machine starts tripping breakers or losing a function months after anyone touched it. A two-dollar gasket is what stands between the enclosure and that outcome, which is why it should never be left out to “get the machine back on the road”.
It is a safety part as much as a reliability one. The components behind that cover are at mains potential.
When to replace it
Fit a new one every time the electrical cover comes off. The gasket has taken a permanent set around the cover’s face, and a reused one no longer closes the gap evenly — it is the single most likely route for moisture to find its way back into an enclosure you have just opened.
Replace it on inspection if it has hardened, torn, split, compressed permanently flat, or crept out of its seat. Replace it without question if you find corrosion, greening or water staining inside the enclosure, because that is evidence moisture has already been getting past it. And replace it if it is simply missing — a machine found in service with the cover fitted but no gasket should not go back out until it has one.
Fitting notes
Isolate the machine from the mains before the cover comes off and keep it isolated until the new gasket and cover are back on. Clean the sealing face down to bare material; dried detergent residue stops a new gasket bedding down. Seat the gasket without stretching it — a stretched gasket pulls back over time and opens a gap at the join. Check the cover itself while it is off: a cracked or warped cover will not seal against even a new gasket, and in that case it needs replacing too (part number X9542). Bring the fasteners up evenly so the gasket compresses square, and make sure no wiring is pinched as the cover closes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Plastic Cover Gasket X9571 do on the Tornado PS Spotter 98220?
It seals the electrical components cover against its flange, keeping the moist, detergent-laden air inside the housing away from components that are at mains potential. Without it the cover stops splash but not vapour.
Will this gasket fit my Tornado 98220?
Only if your serial label shows Series G. Tornado’s cross-reference returns this gasket for the Series G build alone, because that revision reworked the electrical enclosure. Call us at 763-535-0770 with the serial number and we will check it.
Do I need to replace the gasket every time I open the electrical cover?
Yes. It has taken a permanent set around the cover’s face and a reused one will not close the gap evenly. It is the most likely route for moisture to get back into an enclosure you have just opened, and it costs very little next to the switch and terminals it protects.
