The Pump Plate (part# 31471) is the genuine Tornado OEM mounting plate that carries the solution pump on the PS Series professional spotters. Tornado’s own parts catalog names it “Plate, Pump Rev G, 98220/68220”, and it is the Series G version of that mounting position — the Series C through F parts books list a different part number in the same place, so the series letter on your machine’s serial label decides which one you need.

Compatible Models for the Pump Plate

  • Tornado PS Spotter 98220 — PS Series professional spotter, 115V, Series G
  • Tornado PS8221 Spotter 98221 — the 230-volt build of the same machine, Series G

What the pump plate does

The solution pump on a PS Series spotter does not sit loose in the housing. It is carried on a plate so that the pump, its fittings and the solution lines keep their alignment while the machine is lifted in and out of a vehicle, and so that the pump’s vibration is transferred into the chassis rather than into the plumbing. The plate shows up on three separate Series G drawings — the solution tank sheet, the handle assembly sheet and the main assembly sheet — which tells you how central it is to the way the pump end of this machine is put together.

When to replace the pump plate

The usual reasons to buy this part are physical rather than electrical. A plate that has been bent, cracked around a mounting hole, or corroded at the fastener points will let the pump move, and a pump that moves works its fittings loose — which shows up first as a weak or intermittent spray, or as a damp patch under the pump rather than a true leak from a hose. If you have already replaced a pump on this machine and the new one will not sit square, check the plate before you blame the pump. A plate is also worth replacing on sight if you are rebuilding the pump end of an older machine, because it is far cheaper than the pump it protects.

Fitting notes

This is a Series G part. If your serial label shows Series C, D, E or F, the factory books list a different part in this position (bracket 30476), and the two are not interchangeable without checking the surrounding hardware. Order the plate that matches your series, or call us and we will read the series off your serial number for you. Twin City Vacuum has been selling and servicing Tornado equipment since 1956, and we keep PS Series spotter parts on the shelf in Crystal, Minnesota.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Pump Plate do on the Tornado PS Spotter 98220?

It is the mounting plate that carries the solution pump. It holds the pump in alignment with its fittings and the solution lines, and it ties the pump’s vibration into the chassis instead of into the plumbing.

How do I know if my Pump Plate needs replacing?

Look for a bend, a crack around a mounting hole, or corrosion at the fastener points. The symptom you notice first is usually a pump that will not sit square or a weak, intermittent spray caused by fittings that keep working loose.

What models is the Pump Plate (part# 31471) compatible with?

It is the Series G pump plate for the Tornado PS Spotter 98220 (115V) and the Tornado PS8221 Spotter 98221 (230V). Series C through F machines list a different part number in this position, so check the series letter on your serial label first.
