Tornado Screw X8262

$2.99

Genuine OEM screw, part# X8262, for commercial carpet spotters and vapor misters. The dealer catalog lists it only as “screw” with no head style, drive or material given, so it is ordered by part number; the parts book gives the thread and length as #8-32 x 1/4 in. It is not interchangeable with the other screws on the same assembly. Fitted across Tornado and Powr-Flite machines including the PS Spotter 98220 — see the compatibility list below.

Genuine OEM screw, part# X8262, for commercial carpet spotters and vapor misters — a shared fastener fitted across Tornado and Powr-Flite machines as well as the PS Spotter 98220 (see the list below). The dealer catalog lists it simply as “screw” with no further specification; the parts book gives the size as #8-32 x 1/4 in. The solution tank assembly uses four.

Compatible Models for Screw X8262

Ordering by part number, not by description

This screw is supplied and listed by its part number alone. The dealer catalog carries no head style, drive type, material or finish for it beyond the word “screw”, and we do not publish specifications we cannot source — so rather than describe it loosely, we list it the way the factory does. The part number is what identifies it, and ordering X8262 gets you the fastener the factory fits.

The parts book does give the thread and length: #8-32 x 1/4 in. That makes it a short machine screw in a small thread size, and the short length is worth noting because it says something about how it is used. A 1/4 inch screw has very little thread engagement to work with; it is holding something thin against something else, and the depth available behind it is limited.

What it is not is interchangeable with the other screws on this assembly. The solution tank assembly uses several different screws in different sizes and head styles — there are #10-24 and #10-16 screws on the same sheet, and a 5/16-18 screw carrying the wheels. They are separate part numbers because they are not substitutes for one another, and the commonest workshop error on an assembly like this is reaching into a tray of mixed fasteners and fitting whatever starts in the hole.

When to replace it

Replace any screw whose drive recess is damaged, since a cammed-out recess will not take full torque and strips completely on the next attempt. Replace any with a stretched, galled or stripped thread, a bent shank, a cracked or deformed head, or visible corrosion.

Because the assembly uses four of them and they are inexpensive, the practical approach is to keep spares to hand rather than find a chewed head mid-job. A fastener is the cheapest thing on the machine and the most likely to stall a repair.

If a screw will not hold torque and the screw itself is sound, the thread it goes into has failed — a new screw will not cure that, and it is a different repair. On a short #8-32 fastener this is a real possibility, because there is not much thread in the hole to begin with.

Fitting notes

Use a driver bit that properly fills the recess. A bit one size too small contacts only the edges of the drive and cams out under load, which is how most of these heads are ruined.

Tighten to a firm, even clamp and no further. With only a quarter inch of thread there is little margin, and over-tightening a small screw either strips the thread in the mating part or cracks the material around the hole — damage you may not notice until something leaks or rattles. Where several screws hold one panel or cover, bring them up progressively in a crossing pattern so the part seats flat and any gasket under it compresses evenly.

Do not substitute a longer screw because that is what is in the box. The length is sized to the hole, and a longer one can bottom out, pass through into whatever sits behind the panel, or clamp on the wrong face.

If you are unsure whether X8262 is the fastener you need, call us with the model and serial number before ordering. On an assembly that uses four or five similar-looking screws in different sizes, confirming the part number is quicker than fitting the wrong one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is Screw X8262?

The parts book gives the thread and length as #8-32 x 1/4 in. The dealer catalog lists the item only as “screw” with no head style, drive type, material or finish, so we publish the thread and length from the parts book and nothing we cannot source. The part number is what identifies it.

Can I use another screw from the same assembly instead of Screw X8262?

No. The solution tank assembly uses several different screws — there are #10-24 and #10-16 sizes on the same sheet and a 5/16-18 screw carrying the wheels. They carry separate part numbers because they are not substitutes, and fitting whatever starts in the hole is the commonest error on an assembly like this.

The screw will not tighten up. What is wrong?

If the screw itself is sound, the thread it goes into has most likely failed — and a new screw will not fix that. It is a real possibility on a 1/4 inch #8-32 fastener, because there is little thread engagement to begin with. That is a different repair, so call us and we will talk it through.
