Genuine Tornado OEM stair tool, 30 inches tall with a 10-inch stainless steel head, rated to 500 p.s.i. (part# AA173.1). The length is the whole point of this one: the long body lets an operator stand upright on the landing and work a full flight without kneeling on every step, and the 10-inch head covers a standard tread in a single pass instead of three.
What the 30-inch body changes about stair work
Stair cleaning is slow because of the posture, not because of the carpet. A short hand tool means crouching, repositioning and dragging a hose up behind you step by step. A 30-inch tool lets you reach two or three treads from one position and keeps your wrist straight while you do it. On a building with several flights that difference shows up as finished flights per hour, and it shows up in the operator’s back at the end of a shift.
Where the 10-inch head helps and where it does not
On open treads and wide stairs the wide head is faster. It is the wrong tool for a narrow winder stair, for the corner where the riser meets the tread, and for spot work on upholstery — the 6-inch 800 p.s.i. tool (part# AA192.1) is the one for tight access and heavy soil. Check the 500 p.s.i. rating against what your pump delivers before ordering; the rating is a ceiling, not a target.
When to replace it
Replace it when the glide face has worn so that it drags or marks the carpet, when the spray will not form an even fan after the jet has been cleaned, or when it leaks at the head under working pressure. Check the handle joint too — a long tool takes leverage loads a short one never sees, and a loosening joint shows up as a tool that will not hold its angle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the 30-inch stair tool (part# AA173.1) different from a short stair tool?
Reach and coverage. The 30-inch body lets the operator work a flight standing upright instead of crouching on each step, and the 10-inch stainless head covers a standard tread in one pass rather than three.
Is the 10-inch head too wide for some stairs?
On a narrow winder stair, in the riser-to-tread corner, or for upholstery spot work, yes — use the 6-inch 800 p.s.i. tool (part# AA192.1) instead. The wide head earns its keep on open treads and wide straight flights.
What pressure can the 30-inch stair tool (part# AA173.1) take?
It is rated to 500 p.s.i. That is a maximum rather than a working target. Check what your pump and hose actually deliver first; running a tool above its rating makes it weep at the head long before it wears out.
