Choosing the right Tornado Zephyr parts

The Zephyr divides into three groups, and knowing which group a fault belongs to saves most of the diagnosis. The main unit holds the motor, the electronics control system, the battery rail and contacts, the HEPA cartridge and the housing that carries all of it. The harness is the switch and wiring assembly plus the shoulder harness the operator actually wears. The accessories are what wears out fastest — the fleece bags, the suction hose, the telescopic wand, the crevice tool, the upholstery and combination nozzles.

Three rules of thumb. A drop in suction is almost always a full bag, a loaded HEPA cartridge or a split hose before it is ever the motor. A machine that will not start with a charged battery points at the battery contacts, the control cable or the electronics control system rather than at the battery itself. And a Zephyr that runs but whistles or smells hot usually has a blocked motor protection filter, which is a two-minute job and a few dollars.

The Zephyr shares its 36-volt battery pack and charger with Tornado’s other cordless machines — the same 36V 7.5 Ah pack fits the Strike, the Tempest and the Zephyr — so a shop running more than one of them can keep a single spare battery on the shelf and move it between machines. Several small fasteners, ferrite rings and the HEPA cartridge are shared with the Tornado Strike as well.

TV570-Q03-U. It is worth quoting that number when you call, because Tornado’s cordless range shares a family resemblance and several part numbers, and the model number is what separates a Zephyr part from a Strike or Tempest part.

How often should the filters be changed?

Change the fleece bag when it is about two-thirds full rather than waiting for it to pack — suction falls away long before a bag looks full. The motor protection filter is a consumable that ships in packs of three and should be checked every time the bag is changed. The HEPA cartridge lasts much longer but is not permanent; replace it when it is visibly grey through its depth or when airflow has not come back after a bag and pre-filter change.

Can I use the Zephyr battery in another Tornado machine?

Yes, within the cordless range. Tacony catalogues the 36V 7.5 Ah pack as fitting the TV190-W10-U Strike, the TV400-W26-U Tempest and the TV570-Q03-U Zephyr. Charge times and run times differ by machine because the loads differ, but the pack itself is the same part.

My Zephyr has lost suction. Where do I start?

In order: bag, pre-filter, motor protection filter, HEPA cartridge, then the hose and wand for a split or a blockage, then the seals around the tank. Only after all of those would we look at the motor. Most lost-suction calls we take are solved in the first three steps.
