The baseplate (part# K56054723) is the flat black panel that closes the underside of the Tornado Zephyr and gives the machine a face to stand on when it is set down.

What the baseplate does

It closes the bottom of the body, protects the motor compartment from whatever the machine is rested on, and carries the mounting points that locate the housing baseplate above it. On a backpack that spends its life being put down on hard floors and stairs, this is the part taking the abrasion.

Signs it needs replacing

Replace it when it is cracked, when a mounting boss has pulled out, or when it has worn thin enough to flex under hand pressure. A baseplate that no longer sits flat lets the machine rock when set down, which works the fasteners loose over time.

Installation and fit

Take the battery out first. The plate unscrews from below; keep the fasteners in order and start every screw by hand before tightening so the new plate pulls down square rather than cocked to one side.

No. The M5 x 30 screws are part K73030860 and are ordered separately — they are inexpensive and worth adding if the old ones are chewed.

Can I run the machine without it?

You can, but do not. It is what keeps grit and floor water out of the motor compartment.
