What the Air Duct Cover Does

Everything the vacuum motor pulls has to travel through this duct, and the duct only delivers that airflow if it is sealed and undamaged. A cracked duct cover is an air leak downstream of the filter, which means the motor spends its effort pulling room air through the crack instead of air through the carpet. The machine still sounds normal; it simply stops picking up as well.
