Tornado Tempest Filter Gasket K53650760

This is the filter gasket for the Tornado Tempest. Tacony’s dealer record names it Gasket, Filter, which is what separates it from the top gasket used at the other face of the filter — the parts book lists both simply as Seal, and they are different part numbers at different prices.

What the Filter Gasket Does

A filter that is not sealed at its edge is bypassed, and a bypassed filter is worse than no filter at all because it gives the operator every reason to think the machine is working. This gasket closes the joint between the filter and its housing so that all the air the motor moves goes through the media rather than round it.

Where It Sits on the Machine

It seats between the filter and the filter housing on the Tempest filter and blower diagram, opposite the top gasket.

When to Replace It

Replace the gasket whenever the filter is changed, and any time it has hardened, torn or taken a permanent set. Gaskets stiffen with age whether or not the machine is used heavily, and a set gasket will not recover its seal once it has been compressed for a year. It is a small cost against the filter it protects.

Fitting Notes

Clean the sealing faces before fitting — compacted dust on the housing face will hold the gasket off just as effectively as a worn gasket. Seat it along its whole length without stretching it, then fit the filter and check it sits square in the housing before closing up.

Should I change the gasket every time I change the filter?

We would. A new filter behind an old hardened gasket is a partly bypassed filter, which defeats the point of the new one. The gaskets are inexpensive relative to the filter, and you are already in the machine.
