What the Fork Head Does

A fork head is a clevis-style end fitting: it straddles the component it drives and pins through it, which allows the joint to pivot while transmitting push and pull in a straight line. In the Tempest shaker it is the connection between the connecting link and the cleaning mechanism, and it is a joint that reverses direction every stroke.

When to Replace It

Replace the fork head if the fork has spread, if the pin hole has worn oval, or if there is a crack at the root of the fork. Reversing loads are hard on this kind of fitting, and once play develops at the pin it accelerates. A knocking noise from the shaker under load is the usual first sign.

Fitting Notes

Check the pin and the mating hole as well as the fork itself; replacing one worn half of a worn pair only masks the problem. Reassemble the linkage in its original relationship and cycle it by hand before closing the machine up.
