This is the side seal for the Tornado Tempest hopper. Tacony’s dealer record names it Side Seal, Hopper. Two are fitted, one down each side, and they are a different part number from the single top seal — the printed parts book lists both simply as Seal, which is why ordering by part number matters here.

What the Hopper Side Seal Does

The side seals close the vertical gaps between the hopper and the cover. Together with the top seal they turn the hopper into a closed box, which is what keeps the fine dust the brushroll throws forward inside the machine. When one side seal fails, dust escapes down that side only — a useful diagnostic, because a uniform leak across the top points at the top seal or the cover instead.

When to Replace It

Replace a seal that has hardened, taken a permanent set, torn, or lifted along part of its length. Seals stiffen with age even on machines that see light use, so age matters as much as hours. If you are replacing one side seal, replace both — they will have aged together.

Fitting Notes

Clean the sealing faces thoroughly first; compacted dust on the mating surface stops a new seal sealing. Seat the seal along its full length without stretching it, then close the cover and look for even contact down both sides. Uneven contact after new seals points at the cover hinges rather than the seals.
