Tornado Tempest Hopper Top Seal K53650810

This is the top seal for the Tornado Tempest hopper. Tacony’s dealer record names it Top Seal, Hopper, which separates it from the side seals that run down the hopper’s edges — both are listed in the printed parts book simply as Seal, and they are different part numbers with different prices.

What the Hopper Top Seal Does

The hopper is only as good as its seals. The top seal closes the gap between the hopper and the cover so that the air and fine dust the brushroll throws forward stay inside the debris container instead of escaping back into the room. A failed top seal is the usual reason a Tempest starts putting a plume of fine dust out of the top of the machine.

It seats along the upper edge of the hopper where the cover closes onto it, shown on the Tempest handle and frame diagram.

When to Replace It

Replace the seal when it has gone hard, taken a permanent set, torn, or lost adhesion along part of its length. Fine dust escaping from the top of the machine, or a visible witness line where the cover no longer contacts the seal evenly, are the signs to look for. Seals are consumable and stiffen with age even on lightly used machines.

Fitting Notes

Clean the sealing face thoroughly before fitting — compacted dust on the mating surface will stop a new seal sealing just as effectively as a worn one. Seat it along its whole length without stretching it, then close the cover and check for even contact across the width before the machine goes back into service.

My Tempest is putting dust out of the top. Is this the part?

It is the first one to check. The top seal closes the hopper against the cover, so when it hardens or tears, fine dust escapes there. Also check the cover itself sits down evenly and that the side seals are intact, since a distorted cover will leak past a perfectly good seal.

Is this the same as the hopper side seal?

No. The top seal is K53650810 and the side seal is K53650820, and two side seals are fitted against one top seal. The parts book prints both as Seal, so order by part number rather than description.
