This is the metal hinge that lets the Tornado Tempest cover swing up off the hopper. Tacony’s dealer record names it Metal Hinge; the printed parts book calls the same number Hinge Plate. Two are fitted per machine.

What the Metal Hinge Plate Does

The hinges do more than let the cover open. They set where the cover lands when it closes, which is what decides whether the hopper seals bear evenly across their width. A hinge with a worn pin hole lets the cover drop slightly out of position, and the seal then contacts on one side before the other.

When to Replace It

Replace a hinge plate that is bent, cracked, or has worn its pivot hole oval. The symptoms are a cover that does not sit square when closed, a cover that has to be pushed sideways to latch, or dust escaping down one side of the hopper only. Covers get slammed in commercial use and the hinges take that load.

Fitting Notes

Fit both hinges loosely first, close the cover to check it lands square on the hopper seals, then tighten. Fitting one hinge fully before the other is the usual reason a new hinge still leaves the cover sitting crooked. Check the hinge screws and washers for wear while you are there.

Check the hinges first. Open the cover and look at both pivot holes for wear, and check neither plate is bent. A worn hinge drops the cover slightly out of square, and it will then leak past a perfectly good seal. If the hinges are sound, move on to the top and side seals.
