This is the washer used at the push handle pivot on the Tornado Tempest. Tacony’s dealer record names it Washer, Push Handle, which is what distinguishes it from the other plain washers on the machine — the Tempest uses separate washer part numbers at the wheel, the caster, the hinge, the battery housing and the side broom.

What the Push Handle Washer Does

At a pivot, the washer is a bearing surface as much as a load spreader. It keeps the screw head and the star grip from bearing directly on the bracket face, which is what stops the bracket wearing an oval hole as the handle is folded and raised through its life.

One is fitted at each handle bracket on the Tempest handle and frame diagram, under the M8 x 25 saucer head screw.

When to Replace It

Replace a washer that has scored, dished or worn thin. On a pivot these do wear, and a worn washer is a cheap cause of handle play. Fit new ones whenever the handle comes off for any other reason, since the part costs very little and getting back in there is the expensive bit.

Fitting Notes

Fit the washer between the screw head and the bracket. Keep the pivot free — the screw and washer locate the handle, and the star grip does the clamping. If the handle is stiff to fold after assembly, something has been over-tightened rather than the washer being wrong.
