The rear axle assembly carries the two rear wheels and sets the back end of the Tornado Tempest at its working height. What the Rear Axle Assembly Does

Because the rear axle fixes the height of the back of the machine and the caster fixes the front, the two together determine how the brushroll meets the carpet. A bent axle or a worn mounting plate lets the rear of the sweeper drop or sit crooked, and the brush then sweeps hard on one side and skims on the other. Replacing the assembly restores the original geometry in one step instead of chasing the problem through brush and skirt parts.

When to Replace It

Replace the assembly if the axle is visibly bent, if a mounting plate has cracked or elongated its bolt holes, or if the machine rolls with a wobble that new wheels do not cure. Heavy commercial use, kerbs and loading-dock edges are the usual causes. If only the wheels are worn, fit new wheels first — they are a far cheaper part and cure most rolling complaints.

Fitting Notes

Support the rear of the machine before unbolting anything, because the sweeper will drop onto the brushroll as soon as the axle is free. Transfer the wheels, washers, lock washers and hubcaps to the new assembly and torque the axle nuts firmly. Roll the machine on a flat floor afterwards and confirm it tracks straight before putting it back into service.
