This is the metal plate that clamps a side skirt to the Tornado Tempest housing. Tacony’s dealer record names it Metal Plate, Side Skirt. Two are fitted to a machine, one on each side, and they are a different part from the side skirt frame that sits behind them and from the front skirt plate.

What the Side Skirt Metal Plate Does

The side skirts stop debris escaping sideways from under a 26 inch cleaning head. That only works if each skirt is held flat along its whole length, which is the plate’s job. A distorted plate lets the skirt lift, and the debris that escapes shows up as a dusty line down either side of the swept path.

When to Replace It

Replace a plate that has been bent, has elongated screw holes, or is corroded enough that it will not pull the skirt flat. Side plates take knocks from furniture legs, kick boards and door frames, so check them whenever a side skirt is replaced — a bent plate will destroy a new skirt in short order.

Fitting Notes

Check the plate against a straightedge before refitting. Seat the skirt fully in its channel, then tighten evenly along the length rather than pulling one end down first. With the machine at working height, the side skirt should contact the carpet along its full length.
