This is the vacuum motor for the Tornado Tempest. Tacony’s dealer record names it Vacuum Motor; the parts book prints the same number against Blower. It is the motor that generates the airflow through the filter and the hopper, and it is a different part from the filter shaker motor, the brush motor and the side broom motor.

What the Vacuum Motor Does

On a sweeper the brushroll does the mechanical work and the vacuum motor does the rest: it pulls the fine dust the brush lifts through the filter, so that what leaves the machine is clean air. A tired vacuum motor shows up as a machine that still sweeps visible debris but leaves the carpet looking dusty and puts fines back into the room.

When to Replace It

Replace the motor when the brushes are worn out, when it has become loud or is running hot, or when airflow is clearly down with a new filter and intact seals. Before condemning a motor, fit a new filter and check every hopper and duct seal — a leaking seal or a blocked filter will imitate a failing motor closely, and both are far cheaper to fix.

Fitting Notes

Note the duct and gasket arrangement as you take it apart. A vacuum motor only performs if the air path is sealed, so any gasket that is hardened or torn should be replaced while the machine is open rather than left for a second strip-down. Check the harness connection is clean and secure before refitting the duct cover.

How do I tell a failing vacuum motor from a blocked filter?

Fit a known-good filter first, then check the hopper and duct seals. If airflow comes back, the motor was never the problem. If airflow is still down with a clean filter and sound seals, and the motor is noisy or running hot, the motor is the likely cause. Does the motor come with gaskets?
