Tornado Tempest Wheel K64354120

This is the road wheel that runs on each end of the Tornado Tempest rear axle. Two are fitted per machine. Tacony supplies it on the dealer system simply as Wheel, and it is the only wheel of its kind on the Tempest — the swivel caster at the front is a different and much smaller part.

What the Wheel Does

The two rear wheels carry most of the machine’s weight and, together with the front caster, hold the cleaning head at its working height. They also do the steering: the operator turns the Tempest by pivoting on these wheels, so the tread and the bore both take constant side loading in commercial use.

Where It Sits on the Machine

Each wheel mounts on the end of the rear axle assembly on the Tempest handle and frame diagram, retained by a washer, a lock washer and an axle nut, with a hubcap pressed over the outside.

When to Replace It

Replace a wheel when the tread has worn flat or gone hard, when the bore has opened up and the wheel wobbles on the axle, or when the rim is cracked. Flat spots and a hardened tread show up as a rumble on hard floors and as marking on light-coloured vinyl. A wheel with a worn bore lets the back of the machine drop slightly, which changes how the brushroll meets the carpet.

Fitting Notes

Replace both wheels together. A new wheel on one side and a worn one on the other leaves the machine sitting crooked, which undoes the benefit. Support the rear of the sweeper, remove the hubcap and axle nut, slide the old wheel off, and reuse the washer and lock washer if they are in good order. Torque the nut firmly and refit the hubcap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to replace both rear wheels at once?

We recommend it. The two wheels set the height of the back of the machine, so fitting one new wheel against one worn wheel leaves the sweeper sitting slightly crooked and makes the brushroll wear unevenly. The wheels are inexpensive enough that doing the pair is usually the sensible call.

Is this the same as the caster wheel at the front?

No. The front swivel caster is part number K69660680 and is a smaller, pivoting wheel. K64354120 is the fixed rear road wheel that runs on the axle. They are not interchangeable.
