This is the plain washer that sits with the rear wheel on the Tornado Tempest axle. Tacony’s dealer record names it Washer, Wheel, which is what distinguishes it from the several other washers used elsewhere on the machine — the Tempest uses different washers at the caster, the push handle and the battery housing, and they are all separate part numbers.

What the Wheel Washer Does

Its job is to spread the clamping load of the axle nut across the wheel hub rather than letting the nut bear on a small area. That keeps the wheel running true on the axle and stops the nut from digging into the hub face as the machine is pushed and turned.

Where It Sits on the Machine

One is fitted at each end of the rear axle on the Tempest handle and frame diagram, between the wheel and the lock washer.

When to Replace It

Replace a washer that has become dished, scored or corroded. It is a low-cost part and there is no reason to reuse a damaged one when the wheel is off. If a wheel has been running loose, replace the washer and lock washer together, because the hammering that comes with a loose wheel usually damages both.

Fitting Notes

Order of assembly matters: wheel, then washer, then lock washer, then axle nut. Getting the lock washer on the wrong side of the plain washer is a common mistake and means the lock washer cannot bite properly. Tighten the nut firmly and refit the hubcap.
