Tornado Vortex Multi-Surface Scrubber — Vortex 13 (TS050-W13-U) and Vortex 18 (TS050-W18-U)

The Tornado Vortex Multi-Surface Scrubber is the only scrubber in the Tornado lineup that cleans both hard floors and soft surfaces — rubber sports mats, entrance mats, commercial carpet, and escalator steps — in addition to the tile, VCT, and concrete that every floor scrubber handles. The Vortex uses 650 RPM counter-rotating cylindrical brushes that scrub and lift dirt and water onto a rotating recovery drum — a recovery mechanism fundamentally different from a squeegee that works on uneven, textured, and flexible surfaces that squeegees cannot follow. The 650 RPM brush speed delivers up to 4 times more brush contact with the floor surface than comparable disk scrubbers. Low-moisture design with removable 1-gallon solution and recovery tanks, 40-ft cord, and a full accessory brush system. Available in Vortex 13 (Catalog #TS050-W13-U) with a 13-inch cleaning path and Vortex 18 (Catalog #TS050-W18-U) with an 18-inch cleaning path. 2-year parts / 2-year labor warranty.

The Vortex 13 fits into narrower spaces — hallways, between rows, tighter corridor widths — and at 58 lbs is 10 lbs lighter. The Vortex 18’s 18-inch path covers 28% more floor per pass and delivers 4,844 sq ft/hr vs 3,775 for the 13. Both models clean the same range of surfaces with the same brush speed and recovery system. Choose based on the tightest aisle you need to access and how much floor you need to cover per shift.

Key Features of the Tornado Vortex Multi-Surface Scrubber

Rotating Recovery Drum — The Feature That Makes Multi-Surface Cleaning Possible

Every other floor scrubber in the Tornado lineup uses a squeegee to recover solution after scrubbing. A squeegee works on smooth, flat, hard floors — it maintains even contact with the surface and channels liquid to the recovery tank. On rubber sports mats, entrance mats, commercial carpet, and escalator steps, a squeegee cannot work: the surface is uneven, flexible, fibrous, or irregular, and the squeegee either rides over the surface features or gets caught on them. The Vortex solves this with a rotating recovery drum that absorbs liquid on contact as it spins — working like a wringer the solution is pressed into as the machine passes. The drum follows surface irregularities, contacts pile fibers, and recovers moisture from soft and hard surfaces alike. This is the mechanism that makes the Vortex uniquely capable across surface types that no other scrubber in the lineup handles.

650 RPM Cylindrical Brushes — Up to 4× Disk Scrubber Contact

The Vortex uses counter-rotating cylindrical brushes at 650 RPM — the same brush geometry as the BR 13/2 and BR 16/3 cylindrical scrubbers, which presses bristles directly into the floor surface at each rotation rather than sweeping across it. At 650 RPM the Vortex delivers up to 4 times more brush contact with the floor surface than comparable disk scrubbers. On hard textured floors, the cylindrical brush geometry penetrates grout lines, surface channels, and texture profiles that disk pads ride over. On rubber sports mats, the bristles work into the disc or pebble surface pattern of the mat without the pad skipping over the raised texture. On entrance mats, the brushes penetrate the pile rather than sitting on top of it. The counter-rotating configuration keeps the machine tracking straight without lateral pull during cleaning passes.

The Full Surface Range — What the Vortex Cleans

Tornado describes the Vortex as cleaning “virtually any hard or soft surface.” In practice that means:

  • Hard floors: Ceramic and quarry tile, VCT, luxury vinyl tile, polished concrete, smooth concrete, epoxy floors — standard commercial hard floors where conventional scrubbers also work, but with better grout and texture penetration from the cylindrical brush
  • Textured and uneven hard floors: Textured anti-slip tile, rough concrete, brick, pavers — the cylindrical brush handles surface irregularities disk pads cannot clean as effectively
  • Rubber sports mats: Gymnasium rubber flooring, fitness center rubber mat flooring, martial arts mat surfaces — the recovery drum picks up moisture from the raised texture of rubber gym flooring without the squeegee catching on disc surfaces
  • Entrance mats: Recessed entrance mat wells and loose entrance mats with pile — the Vortex cleans the mat pile rather than pushing solution around it
  • Commercial carpet: Low-pile commercial carpet and carpet tiles in lobbies, corridors, and office areas — low-moisture cleaning and recovery drum extraction leave carpet substantially dry
  • Escalators: Escalator step surfaces and grooves — the escalator brush accessory (93219.1 for Vortex 18, 93123.1 for Vortex 13) is designed specifically for escalator cleaning; the Vortex is one of the only compact scrubbers with a dedicated escalator brush option

Low-Moisture Design — Floors Dry Quickly After Cleaning

The Vortex delivers solution at a controlled rate that wets the surface for effective scrubbing without flooding it. On hard floors, this means shorter drying times and less residual moisture in grout joints and surface cracks. On rubber mats and entrance mats, it means the mat surface is clean and substantially dry after the scrubbing pass rather than soaked. On commercial carpet, low-moisture application is essential — carpet that’s over-wetted during cleaning requires hours to dry and risks wicking of embedded soil back to the pile surface. The rotating recovery drum’s efficient moisture pickup reinforces the low-moisture design: the drum recovers nearly all applied solution, leaving the surface clean and dry.

Removable Solution and Recovery Tanks — Fast Filling and Emptying

Both the solution and recovery tanks remove from the machine body for filling, emptying, and rinsing. The Vortex’s 1-gallon solution tank and 0.75–1-gallon recovery tank are sized for the low-moisture scrubbing approach — smaller than high-flow scrubbers because less solution is applied per square foot. For multi-surface cleaning routes that include both hard floors and soft surfaces, the small tank size means shorter refill stops between surface types. The removable configuration allows thorough rinsing of both tanks between uses, preventing residual chemistry and debris buildup.

Accessory Brush System — Standard, Soft, Hard, Escalator, and Side Brushes

The Vortex’s accessory brush system extends its surface range across the full spectrum of commercial cleaning applications:

  • Standard brushes (included): General-purpose commercial hard floor cleaning — tile, VCT, concrete, rubber mats, and entrance mats
  • Soft brushes: Polished concrete, delicate coatings, sensitive vinyl, and surfaces where standard bristle hardness would cause abrasion
  • Hard brushes: Heavily soiled hard floors, rough concrete, quarry tile, and surfaces requiring aggressive mechanical agitation
  • Escalator brushes: Specifically designed for escalator step surfaces and grooves — the brush geometry contacts step treads and the grooves between steps where soil accumulates
  • Side brush (optional): Extends cleaning coverage into the edges along walls and baseboards that the main brushes cannot reach without repositioning the machine

Optional transport cart (05-4781-0000) available for both models — provides a wheeled storage platform for moving the Vortex between floors and storing accessories.

Commercial Applications — Tornado Vortex Multi-Surface Scrubber

  • Schools and universities — gymnasiums and fitness centers: Rubber gym flooring requires the rotating drum — squeegee-based scrubbers cannot recover from raised rubber disc surfaces. The Vortex handles gymnasium floors, weight room rubber, and fitness mat surfaces that no conventional scrubber can clean effectively
  • Retail and grocery — entrance mat maintenance: Entrance mats in recessed wells accumulate soil faster than any other floor area in a retail building. The Vortex cleans the mat pile rather than pushing solution through it, leaving entrance mats clean and substantially dry without removal
  • Hotels and convention centers — escalator cleaning: Escalator steps accumulate soil in the grooves between treads that virtually no cleaning equipment addresses — the Vortex with escalator brush accessory is one of the few compact machine-based escalator cleaning solutions available
  • Healthcare — multi-surface corridors: Facilities with mixed hard floor and entrance mat areas throughout a cleaning route; the Vortex eliminates the need to swap tools or machines when transitioning between surface types
  • Education — cafeterias and common areas: Mixed VCT, rubber-backed entrance mats, and commercial carpet tile in a single cleaning area; one machine handles all three without adjustment
  • Sports and recreation facilities: Martial arts studios, sports courts with rubber or synthetic surface, weight rooms — the Vortex’s unique ability to clean soft rubber and mat surfaces is the primary reason it belongs in any facility with non-hard-floor surfaces
  • Building service contractors: Accounts with mixed surface types across one building where carrying multiple scrubbers is impractical; the Vortex handles more surface types per machine than any other compact scrubber in the Tornado lineup

Frequently Asked Questions — Tornado Vortex Multi-Surface Scrubber

Can the Vortex really clean rubber sports mats and commercial carpet?

Yes — and this is the feature that distinguishes the Vortex from every other scrubber in the Tornado lineup. The rotating recovery drum picks up moisture from uneven and flexible surfaces that a squeegee cannot follow. On rubber gym flooring the drum recovers moisture from the raised disc surface texture. On commercial carpet the brushes penetrate the pile and the drum pulls moisture from the fiber rather than leaving it behind. On entrance mats the machine cleans through the pile rather than riding over it. The escalator brush accessory extends this to escalator step surfaces. No other Tornado scrubber handles these surface types.

Which model should I choose — Vortex 13 or Vortex 18?

Width and coverage. The Vortex 13 at 17 inches body width fits narrower spaces and weighs 10 lbs less. The Vortex 18 covers 28% more floor per pass and produces 4,844 vs 3,775 sq ft/hr. Both clean the same surfaces with the same brush speed, recovery drum, and accessory system. If your tightest aisle is the constraint, choose the 13. If coverage rate matters more than access width, choose the 18.

What does “rotating recovery drum” mean compared to a squeegee?

A squeegee is a rubber blade that channels liquid across a smooth flat surface to a pickup point — it only works on flat hard floors. A rotating recovery drum spins and absorbs moisture on contact as the machine passes over the surface, like a sponge roller, then presses the absorbed liquid into the recovery tank. The drum follows uneven surfaces, mat pile, rubber disc texture, and escalator grooves — recovering moisture from surfaces a squeegee physically cannot work on.

What brushes come included?

Standard brushes are included — one pair per machine (93120.1 for the Vortex 13; 93216.1 for the Vortex 18). Soft, hard, escalator, and side brushes are optional accessories available separately. Call us at 763-535-0770 to order accessories.

What warranty does the Vortex carry?

2 years parts, 2 years labor — for both the Vortex 13 and Vortex 18. Note: unlike the BD and BR series which carry a 10-year roto body warranty, the Vortex carries the standard 2/2 warranty without the extended roto term.
