What the telescoping wand does

It sets the working height so the operator is not stooping, and it collapses for storage and for close work. The locking collar has to hold the set length under the push and pull of cleaning — that mechanism is what wears out.

Signs it needs replacing

Replace it when the lock will no longer hold the length, when a section is dented enough to bind, when the tube is cracked at either end, or when the joint to the tool has gone loose. A wand that collapses mid-stroke is a wand that will be thrown at a wall soon after.
