Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Tornado 98168 turn on at all?

Start at the cord and the breaker. A 14/3 x 25″ power cord that has been run over or pinched at the strain relief is the most common cause, and the 2.5A circuit breaker on this panel will trip and stay tripped if something downstream is drawing too much. If the cord tests good and the breaker resets and holds, the rocker switch is the next suspect — they fail closed or dead after enough wet-hand cycles.

How do I tell a bad switch from a bad wiring harness?

A failed switch usually kills one function — the pump or the vacuum — while everything else still runs. A harness fault more often shows up as an intermittent that changes when you move the handle or flex the loom. If wiggling the wiring changes the symptom, replace the main wiring harness rather than chasing individual switches.

Can I replace just the power cord instead of the whole panel?

Yes. The power cord is a separate serviceable part on this diagram and comes off without disturbing the switches or the harness. Replace the cable clamp at the same time if the old one is cracked — a loose clamp is what chafed the cord in the first place.

Do these control panel parts fit every series of the 98168?

This diagram is the 12-Gallon 115V build. The 98168 was produced in several series and the control panel changed in places between them — the strain relief in particular. Have your serial number handy and call 763-535-0770 and we will confirm the right part for your machine before you order.

Browse every assembly for this machine on the Tornado 98168 parts hub, or call 763-535-0770 and we will identify your part from the serial number. Twin City Vacuum, 5415 West Broadway, Crystal, MN 55428.
