The motor shroud (part# B113-0915) is a genuine Tacony OEM moulding that wraps the motor inside a backpack vacuum. It is a natural-coloured shroud that sits between the motor and the outer housing, and it does three jobs at once: it locates the motor, it channels cooling and exhaust air along the path the design intends, and it damps the noise the motor would otherwise radiate straight into the operator’s back.

What the motor shroud does

A backpack vacuum motor is a small, very fast machine sitting a few inches from someone’s spine for a full shift. The motor shroud is much of the reason that is tolerable. It holds the motor square in its housing so vibration is not transmitted directly into the frame, and it forms a duct so cooling air passes over the motor rather than swirling inside the body.

Because it lives against a hot motor, the moulding is heat-cycled thousands of times over the machine’s life. Plastic that has been through that becomes brittle, and brittle plastic cracks at its stress points rather than in open areas — usually at a mounting boss or a rib.

When the motor shroud needs replacing

Replace it if you find a crack anywhere in the moulding, if a mounting boss has broken or stripped, if the shroud no longer seats squarely around the motor, or if the machine has developed a rattle or drone that changes when you press on the housing.

Replace it too if the plastic has discoloured and gone chalky. That is heat damage, and a shroud in that state will crack the next time it is disturbed even if it looks sound today — which usually means stripping the machine twice.

Because reaching the shroud means getting the motor out, most technicians replace the motor mounts and seals at the same time. Those are inexpensive rubber parts that age with the same heat, and the teardown is identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the motor shroud (part# B113-0915) actually do?

It wraps the motor inside the machine: locating it squarely, ducting cooling and exhaust air along the intended path, and damping motor noise before it reaches the operator.

How do I know if my motor shroud (part# B113-0915) needs replacing?

Look for cracks in the moulding, a broken or stripped mounting boss, a shroud that no longer seats squarely on the motor, a rattle that changes when you press the housing, or plastic gone chalky and discoloured from heat.

What else should I replace while the motor is out?

The motor mounts and motor seals. They age with the same heat that embrittles the shroud, they cost very little, and reaching them requires exactly the same teardown.

How do I order the motor shroud (part# B113-0915) or get help?
