This is the Phillips flat head, stainless #10-24 x 1/2 inch screw. The machine also uses a zinc-plated hex head screw of identical thread and length under a different number, so order by part number rather than by size. Part number 19165 is the flat head stainless version.

A flat head is a countersunk head: it is meant to pull down into a tapered seat and finish flush with the surface. That is why it is used where something has to slide, seal or sit against the face — a proud head would foul it. Fitting a hex head screw in one of these positions leaves the head standing above the surface and defeats the reason the countersink exists.

Stainless rather than plated is the other half of the specification. Where this screw is used, it is exposed to standing detergent solution, and a plated screw would eventually corrode through its coating and seize. Stainless costs more and it is why the fastener is still removable in five years.

The weakness of a Phillips flat head is the recess. It is designed to cam out at high torque, which protects the thread but chews the recess if you keep pushing. Use a driver that fits the recess properly and let it seat before applying force. A rounded recess on a flush screw is a genuinely awkward thing to remove, because there is no head standing proud to grip.

Do not mix stainless and plated fasteners in the same joint where you can avoid it. Dissimilar metals in a wet, detergent-rich environment corrode galvanically at the junction, and the softer of the two loses.

Fit with clean threads and a correctly sized driver, to firm torque. #10-24 in a countersink seats positively — when the head stops moving into the taper, that is the joint tight; anything beyond that is loading the thread for nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Tornado machines does the screw 19165 fit?

It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.

How is 19165 different from the other #10-24 x 1/2 inch screw?

Head style and material. 19165 is a stainless Phillips flat head that pulls down into a countersink and finishes flush; the other is a zinc-plated hex head that sits proud on a flat face. Same thread and length, different part numbers, and swapping them defeats the reason each was chosen.

I rounded the recess — why does that happen?

A Phillips recess is designed to cam out at high torque, which protects the thread and chews the recess if you keep pushing. Use a driver that fits properly and let it seat before applying force. A rounded recess on a flush screw is awkward to remove because no head stands proud to grip.
