What the soft carpet baseplate changes

The baseplate is the plate the nozzle rides on and the frame the agitator turns inside. Changing it changes two things at once: how much of the brush roll reaches the carpet, and how easily the head glides. The soft-carpet version opens the nozzle differently and rides higher, which is the whole point on a plush or soft-touch carpet, where a standard baseplate buries the brush in the pile and makes the machine a fight to push.

Fitting the soft carpet baseplate

Unplug the machine before you start. The baseplate comes off the underside of the nozzle with its retaining screws; note how the squeegee and the baseplate wheels sit before you separate anything, because they transfer across. Fit the new plate with the agitator seated in its bearings, start every screw by hand, and tighten to snug — these run into plastic bosses, and a stripped boss is a nozzle housing rather than a baseplate. Turn the brush by hand before powering up to confirm it spins freely and does not catch on the plate.

Keep the standard baseplate. Machines that cover both carpet types in one building get swapped back and forth, and the two plates are not interchangeable in performance — the soft-carpet plate will under-agitate a commercial loop carpet.
