The shroud latch bracket is the fixed half of the catch that holds the brush shroud closed. The lever and its cap move; this bracket does not — it is the anchor the lever pulls against every time the shroud is secured. Part number 19239 is the genuine OEM bracket for the MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors.

Because it is the anchor, this is the part that takes the load when someone forces a shroud closed against a jammed brush or a packed bearing block. What you see is a bracket bent out of true, or elongated mounting holes where it has been worked against its fasteners over years. Either way the lever no longer pulls the shroud tight, and a shroud that does not seal loses suction at the nozzle without any obvious leak elsewhere.

Before condemning it, look at what the latch is being asked to close against. A brush shroud that needs force is usually telling you the brush, its bearing blocks or the shroud gasket are the real problem. Fitting a new bracket under a shroud that still will not close easily just bends the new one.

Check the bracket by closing the latch and looking at the gap along the shroud edge. An even, small gap all round is right. A wedge-shaped gap that closes at one end means the bracket has moved or bent. Try the fasteners too: if the bracket rocks on its mounting when you push it by hand, the holes have opened out and it needs replacing rather than retightening.

Fitting is a few minutes with the machine unplugged. Note the bracket position before it comes off — a bracket refitted a couple of millimetres out changes the latch preload and either leaves the shroud loose or makes it hard to close. Mark the original position, fit the new bracket to it, then close the latch and check the gap before you put the machine back on its wheels.

While you are there, inspect the lever, the lever clamp and the lever cap. They work as a set and they wear together, so a bracket that has failed early usually has worn partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Tornado machines does the shroud latch bracket 19239 fit?

It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.

How do I know the latch bracket needs replacing?

Close the latch and look at the gap along the shroud edge. It should be small and even all round. A wedge-shaped gap means the bracket has bent or moved. If the bracket rocks on its fasteners when you push it by hand, the mounting holes have opened out and it needs replacing rather than retightening.

My shroud is hard to close — is the bracket the problem?

Usually not on its own. A shroud that needs force is normally telling you the brush, its bearing blocks or the shroud gasket are binding. Fix that first: fitting a new bracket under a shroud that still will not close easily simply bends the new one.
