This is the pipework on the outside of the recovery tank — the run that connects the tank to the vacuum side of the machine and carries the drain. Part number 31051 is the genuine OEM external pipe assembly for the MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors, and it is the partner to the internal assembly 31050 that works inside the tank.

External pipework fails for reasons the internal assembly does not share, because it lives in the open where the machine gets handled. The commonest is impact: a machine loaded into a van, wheeled into a lift or tipped over a threshold catches the external run against something solid and cracks it at a joint. The second is the drain end, which is handled every single time the tank is emptied and is the part most likely to be worked loose or snapped.
A leak here is easy to misread as a cracked tank, because water appears down the outside of the machine in both cases. Fill the tank with clean water on the bench, leave it ten minutes and watch where the water actually emerges. A failed external pipe shows a clean run of water from a specific joint; a cracked tank tends to weep over a wider area and often only under vacuum.
Air leaks matter as much as water leaks and are harder to spot. Any opening in the external run between the tank and the vacuum motor bleeds off suction, and the machine picks up poorly everywhere without leaking a drop on the floor. If suction has fallen and the hose, filter and tank lid gasket all check out, run your hand along the external pipework with the machine running and feel for draw at the joints.
Fit the replacement with the machine unplugged, note the routing and clamp positions before the old assembly comes off, and seat every joint fully before tightening. Check the seals at the tank wall while you are there — they are inexpensive, they are only accessible with the pipework off, and a new assembly against a perished seal leaks in exactly the same place.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the external pipe assembly 31051 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number before ordering.
Is my leak the external pipe or a cracked tank?
Fill the tank with clean water on the bench and leave it ten minutes. A failed external pipe gives a clean run of water from one specific joint. A cracked tank tends to weep over a wider area and often only shows under vacuum. Do that before ordering either part.
Could this be why my suction is poor?
Yes. Any opening in the external run between the tank and the vacuum motor bleeds off suction without necessarily leaking water. If the hose, the intake filter and the tank lid gasket all check out, run your hand along the external pipework with the machine running and feel for draw at the joints.
