At an inch and a half this is one of the longest fasteners on the machine, and length is the whole point of it. It is used where the screw has to pass through a stack — a bracket, a spacer and a moulding, or the layered joint where the handle meets the body — and still pick up enough thread at the far end to clamp the stack solid. Substituting a shorter 1/4-20 in one of these positions leaves the joint short of thread engagement, and it will work loose no matter how hard it was tightened.
Because it passes through several parts, this screw takes bending load as well as tension when the handle is pulled or the machine is dragged over a threshold.
