What the top motor mount does

A vacuum motor spinning at tens of thousands of rpm transmits a surprising amount of vibration. The top motor mount is the soft interface that stops that vibration going straight into the machine’s shell — and on a backpack vacuum, into the operator’s back. It also locates the motor so the shroud seals against it correctly, which is what keeps the airflow travelling through the intended path rather than leaking around the motor.

It is a rubber-like part living directly against a heat source, so it ages by hardening. A mount that has gone hard has stopped doing both of its jobs at once: it no longer damps and it no longer seals.
