Kit, not just the handle — and why that matters
Tornado’s catalog name for 31215 is the Steel Transport Replacement Handle Kit (customer installed), and both halves of that phrase are the specification.
“Kit” means it ships with the mounting hardware the handle needs rather than as a bare tube. On a part that carries the whole weight of a loaded machine that is not a trivial difference: the fasteners are sized and specified for the load, and substituting hardware from a drawer is how a handle ends up pulling out of its mounts.
“Customer installed” means Tornado expects this to be fitted in the field rather than in a workshop. It is a straightforward job — the handle bolts to mounting points already on the body — but it is worth reading the machine’s manual for the torque and sequence before you start.
Be aware that there is also a separate part number for the handle on its own (31214) rather than the kit. If your mounting hardware is sound and only the tube is bent, that may be the part you want. Call us at 763-535-0770 and we will work out which one fits your situation before you order — the two are not interchangeable in what they include.
When to replace it
A transport handle leads a hard life. It is the part a machine gets dragged up stairs by, lifted into a van by, and occasionally dropped on.
Replace the handle if the tube is bent, kinked, cracked or split anywhere; if a weld has failed; if it is loose at the mounts and retightening does not hold it; if a mounting point on the handle has elongated or torn; or if the tube has rusted through, which usually starts on the inside at the lowest point where water has collected.
Replace it on sight if there is any crack near a mount or a weld. A handle does not fail gradually once it has started to crack — it holds, and then it lets go with a loaded machine hanging from it.
Check it at every service by taking hold and pulling hard in several directions. There should be no movement at the mounts and no flex in the tube beyond the slight spring steel gives.
Fitting notes
Work with the machine empty. A spotter full of solution or recovery water is heavy and awkward, and this is the part you would normally lift it by.
Note how the old handle is oriented before removing it — the bend is not symmetrical front to back on every build. Use the hardware supplied with the kit rather than reusing the old fasteners, since they have already been stretched, and tighten in the sequence and to the torque the manual gives: even clamping is what keeps a tubular handle from working loose.
After fitting, load the machine and lift it to check. Then retighten after the first day or two of use, which is when any residual settling shows up.
Twin City Vacuum has been selling and servicing Tornado equipment since 1956 and can confirm whether the kit or the bare handle is the right part for your machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included with the Steel Transport Handle Kit 31215?
Tornado supplies it as a kit with the mounting hardware the handle needs, rather than as a bare tube. On a part that carries the full weight of a loaded machine that matters: the fasteners are specified for the load, and substituting hardware from a drawer is how a handle works loose at its mounts.
What is the difference between 31215 and 31214?
31215 is the kit — handle plus mounting hardware, specified by Tornado as customer installed. 31214 is the handle on its own. If your mounting hardware is sound and only the tube is bent, the bare handle may be what you want. Call us at 763-535-0770 and we will confirm which one suits your machine before you order.
How do I know if my transport handle needs replacing?
Take hold of it and pull firmly in several directions: there should be no movement at the mounts and no flex beyond the slight spring the steel gives. Replace it for a bent, kinked, cracked or split tube, a failed weld, an elongated mounting point, rust through the tube, or looseness that retightening will not cure. Any crack near a weld or a mount means replace it now — a handle holds and then lets go all at once.
