Tornado Tempest Pre-Filter K57452800

This is the pre-filter for the Tornado Tempest. Tacony sells it as the pre-filter for the Tempest wide-area carpet sweeper. It sits ahead of the main PTFE flat-pleated filter and takes the coarse load first, which is what keeps the expensive filter behind it working for a reasonable length of time.

What the Pre-Filter Does

Carpet sweeping throws a great deal of lint, fibre and grit at the filtration, and most of it is far too coarse to belong in a pleated filter. The pre-filter catches that material where it can be removed easily. Running a Tempest without a pre-filter, or with a badly damaged one, loads the main filter several times faster and shortens its life accordingly.

It is fitted in the filter housing on the Tempest filter and blower diagram, ahead of the main filter and the prefilter stripper.

When to Replace It

Replace the pre-filter when it is torn, when it has packed solid with fibre and will not clean out, or when it has gone hard and no longer sits properly in the housing. A pre-filter that has collapsed or shifted is worse than none at all, because it lets the coarse load bypass in one place while restricting airflow everywhere else.

Fitting Notes

Fit it so it seats squarely in the housing with no gap at the edges — any bypass route defeats the whole point. Check the prefilter stripper is intact and working while you are in there, since that is the part that keeps the pre-filter clear in service.

Can I run the machine without the pre-filter?

You can, but we would not. The pre-filter takes the coarse fibre and grit that would otherwise load the main PTFE filter directly. Running without it works out considerably more expensive, because the filter behind it is the pricier part and it will need replacing far sooner.

How do I keep the pre-filter clean?

The prefilter stripper, part number K50321230, is designed to keep it clear in normal service. Beyond that, shake the pre-filter out when you empty the hopper and check it for tears. Once fibre has packed solid into the media and will not come out, it is time for a new one.
