Tornado Tempest Swivel Caster Wheel K69660680

The swivel caster is the small pivoting wheel at the front of the Tornado Tempest. Tacony’s dealer record names it Swivel Castor Wheel; the parts book calls the same number simply Caster. One is fitted per machine and it does a great deal of work for its size.

What the Swivel Caster Wheel Does

It sets the height of the front of the machine, which together with the rear axle determines how the brushroll meets the carpet. It also lets the operator steer: because it swivels, the Tempest can be turned in its own length instead of being dragged round. A caster that no longer swivels freely makes the machine fight the operator on every turn.

Where It Sits on the Machine

It mounts under the front of the bottom housing on the Tempest handle and frame diagram, retained by an M10 x 45 screw through a washer gasket and a reinforcement plate, with a nut underneath.

When to Replace It

Replace the caster when the wheel has worn flat, when the swivel has stiffened or seized, or when carpet fibre has wound into the bearing and will not clear. The usual symptoms are a machine that pulls to one side, a front end that judders on turns, or an audible squeal. Because the caster sets the front ride height, a badly worn one also lets the brushroll run deeper than it should.

Fitting Notes

Support the front of the machine, remove the M10 nut and screw, and lift the caster out along with its washer gasket and reinforcement plate. Clear any wound fibre from the mounting area while it is apart. Refit with the gasket and plate in the original order and tighten the M10 hardware firmly — this joint takes the whole front load of the machine.

Why does my Tempest pull to one side?

A stiff or seized front caster is the most common cause, because the machine can no longer pivot freely at the front. Spin the caster by hand: it should swivel smoothly through a full turn and the wheel should roll without resistance. Wound carpet fibre in the bearing is worth clearing before you replace anything.

Does the caster come with its mounting hardware?

No. The M10 x 45 screw, washer, washer gasket, reinforcement plate and nut are separate Tacony part numbers on the same diagram. If the machine has been run with a seized caster it is worth checking that hardware for wear at the same time.
