Tornado Tempest Wheel Lock Washer K63432400

This is the lock washer that keeps the rear axle nut from backing off on the Tornado Tempest. Tacony’s dealer record names it Lock washer, Wheel. It is a different part from the plain wheel washer that sits alongside it, and from the spring washers used on the electronics panel.

What the Wheel Lock Washer Does

A wheel that is constantly pushed, pulled and pivoted works at its retaining nut every hour the machine is in service. The lock washer’s spring tension holds load on the thread so the nut cannot vibrate loose. Without it, a Tempest wheel will eventually work its way off the axle, usually at the least convenient moment.

Where It Sits on the Machine

One is fitted at each end of the rear axle on the Tempest handle and frame diagram, between the plain wheel washer and the axle nut.

When to Replace It

Lock washers are consumable. Once a lock washer has been compressed and released a few times it loses tension and no longer does its job, so fit new ones whenever the wheels come off for any length of time. Replace immediately if you find a wheel nut that has loosened in service, and check the axle thread for damage while you are there.

Fitting Notes

Fit it directly under the axle nut, with the plain washer between the lock washer and the wheel hub. Tighten the nut until the lock washer is compressed and holding tension, then refit the hubcap. Re-check the nut after the first week back in service, which is when a poorly seated washer will show itself.

Should I reuse the old lock washer?

No. A lock washer works by spring tension, and that tension is lost once it has been compressed and released. Fit a new one whenever the wheel comes off — it is a cheap part and it is the thing stopping the wheel nut from vibrating loose.
