A split lock washer is a single coil of hardened spring steel with its ends offset. Tightening the fastener flattens the coil, storing spring tension that keeps load on the threads if the joint relaxes, while the sharp cut ends bite into the nut face and the surface below to resist rotation. Lock washers are single-use in practice. Once flattened, the coil has taken most of its set and will not generate the same tension a second time, and the biting edges are already blunted.
