Washer X9747

The Washer X9747 is a genuine Tacony OEM flat washer used right across the Tornado and Powr-Flite ranges — on backpack vacuum harnesses and inside the solution tank, pump and heater assemblies of the Surge and Pulsar extractors. Its job is load spreading: it sits under the screw head and under the nut so the clamping force is carried across a wide face instead of being concentrated on a small ring of plastic.

That sounds trivial until it is missing. Without the washer, the screw head bites into the moulded body, the plastic creeps under load, and the joint that was tight last month is loose today. On a Pac-Vac harness that shows up as hardware that will not stay tight no matter how often it is nipped up; on an extractor tank assembly it shows up as a weep at a joint. Eight are used per Pac-Vac harness. Replace any washer that has gone dished or cupped instead of flat, that has worn a groove into its own face, or that is corroded — and fit new ones as a matter of course whenever a harness or tank assembly is stripped.

Fitting notes

On the Pac-Vac the washer is reference 40 in the parts book, between the screw at 39 and the nyloc nut at 41. Fit one under the screw head and one under the nut — it is a common shortcut to use only one, and it is a false economy, because the nut face does exactly the same damage to the plastic as the screw head. Tighten until the joint is clamped and stop; the washer is spreading load, not acting as a spring. Order the screws (X9746) and nyloc nuts (X8271) alongside if you are rebuilding a harness, since the nylon collars in those nuts are single-use in practice.
