How do I know if the brush roll needs replacing?
Look at the bristles first — if they are worn short or splayed, the roller will not groom the carpet even at the right height. Then spin the roller by hand with the belt off: if it rumbles, drags or has side-to-side play, the bearings or bearing blocks are the problem rather than the roller itself.
The brush is not turning at all — is it the brush roll?
Usually not. Check the drive belt on the base assembly first, since a broken belt is the most common cause. If the belt is intact, the brush motor or its pulley is the next thing to check. A seized brush roll bearing can also stop the roller, and that part is on this page.
